Cycle helmets

We are pleased to announce that last night Northern Ireland Assembly members voted in favour of a bill to make the wearing of cycle helmet compulsory. This follows a similar success in Jersey.

The bill will need to go through a number of stages before it becomes law. If it does so, cyclists of all ages not wearing helmets will face a fine of £50, which would be rescinded upon proof of a subsequent purchase of a helmet.

The Private Members Bill was introduced by Pat Ramsey MLA with support from Headway. Thanks go to all the Headway Groups and Branches in Northern Ireland that supported the bill by writing to their respective MLAs and to Northern Ireland Regional Co-ordinator Johny Turnbull for his efforts.
